The towers lie in rubble
At the center of world trade
The latest lethal commerce
A signpost of the age
The funeral pyres are still burning
People are afraid
That there's no place to hide
Has never been quite this plain
Some bold souls with convictions
And reasons thought enough
Hijacked those jet airliners
Turned them into bombs
The CIA trained their masters
They learned their lessons well
And came back from Afghanistan
To blow us all to hell
The war has come home
You can smell it in the street
You can't wipe it away from your eyes
The war has come home
You can taste it on your teeth
cries of vengeance rising on all sides
The counting houses emptied
The markets were closed down
So many bet this number
Would never come around
And now who will bet
It won't happen again
Or that the war we are waging
won't make things worse my friends
The flags are flying
Everywhere on high
People talk of the nation
Full of pride
The president has found his mission
The hawks in full command
The media is cheerleading
For the marching bands

Everybody here took a blow right to
the heart
Everybody here has been shaken to the core
People pull together when they're torn apart
The supply of wisdom still is short
When people cry for justice
Do they know what they ask
How can we account
For all those Iraqi babies' deaths
The starving millions
While our grain bins overflow
The poor and sick
Knocking at our doors
The flowers of hatred
Grown beyond all belief
Oh Lord where shall we
Turn to find relief
They think their cause is holy
Our leaders think the same
And everybody will suffer
In the latest crusade
If Jesus and Mohammed
Were here with us today
Perhaps they'd help to guide us
Who have clearly lost our way
Could they move us from murder
To forgiveness and love
To finally understand
We really all are one
Everybody here took a blow right to
the heart
Everybody here has been shaken to the core
People pull together when they're torn apart
Now embrace those far beyond our shores
