They didn’t call their leader president
But they loved him all the same
People used to come from miles around
To shout and holler his name

They loved him for giving them the business
They loved him for giving them a purpose
For lifting their heads and their hands up high
As he promised them the earth and the sky

And the man whose names I won’t mumble
Were the best men in public relations
History had ever seen

Anything we can think of they said
We can make those people believe
We can make them believe that red is green
We can make them believe that dirt is clean
That joy is marching double time

It was astonishing
You could hardly tell there was a war
going on at all

People would sit out on the boulevard drinking tea
Those that weren’t working in the war factories
Going to the zoo, the botanical gardens
Going to the opera so they could hear Wagner

A little weekend in the mountains
Or along the Rhine
Drinking that good beer stein after stein
The oompah music always rhymed
